I was delighted when I saw the email from Bruce Hoffman in my Inbox. The celebrated terrorism expert was writing to ask me to teach a course for his newly established Center on Jewish Civilization at Georgetown University.
At first, you might not see the connection between my work on media and power and Jewish Studies. But when you look deeper into my history you soon find the nexus. As a young scholar at the National Defense University, I authored a paper about what I termed "strategic influence." The topic: the anti-Semitic discourse of Iran's Supreme Leader. This early adventure into the dark world of information and influence operations inspired further investigation as a professor at University of Virginia. Today, my old fascination with the Protocols of the Elders of Zion has taken on a new dimension, as the text and the conspiracy narratives and anti-Semetic tropes now feed an online universe of far right extremism and racial violence in America. Here is the course description:
Protocols of the Elders of Zion: Propaganda, Conspiracy, and the Politics of Hate
For more than a century, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion has been used to advance a powerful and persistent anti-Semitic trope: that Jews are plotting to take over the world. From Adolf Hitler to Henry Ford, rabid anti-Semites have championed the fabricated text as a historical document and published it widely. Using Protocols as a launching point, this course will examine the history and nature of propaganda and conspiracism, with an eye toward understanding how such vehicles of influence are constructed and deployed in the today’s hyper-mediated politics.
